Community Advocate - Calgary


Alberta Association for Community Living is seeking a highly skilled advocate committed to the values of community inclusion to work in our Calgary office.

The successful candidates will have: a demonstrated ability to advocate on behalf of families and individuals with developmental disabilities in their desire and struggle to be fully included in community life; the capacity to address complex, systemic issues of social change; and the ability to work collaboratively with families, children and adults with developmental disabilities, government, local authorities and community organizations.

A knowledge of child protection policies and practices would also be helpful as the position involves working in partnership with child protection services to address the needs of parents with developmental disabilities and children with developmental disabilities who are at risk.

Relevant post-secondary education is preferred (equivalencies will be considered). Salary will commensurate with experience and education.

Community Navigators for People with Developmental Disabilities


Alberta Association for Community Living (AACL) is seeking two individuals to act as Navigators for people with developmental disabilities in the Calgary Region, one person to be located in urban Calgary and one familiar with communities surrounding Calgary. Primary responsibilities will include assisting people with developmental disabilities and their families in planning for an inclusive life, identifying generic community resources and natural supports, facilitating participation in community life and supporting people with developmental disabilities to develop meaningful relationships. This is a one-year project until March 31, 2009.

The successful candidates will be committed to the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in community life and possess the following:
•    Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
•    Knowledge and familiarity with resources and opportunities in the Calgary region
•    Partnership building and problem-solving skills
•    Commitment to research and evaluation
•    Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
A university or college education in disability studies or related field is required. Equivalencies will be considered.

These are full-time project positions ending on March 31, 2009. Salary commensurate with experience.  Only candidates selected for interviews will be contacted.

Inclusive Post-Secondary Education Coordinator


An Inclusive Post-Secondary Education Coordinator is required to support the inclusion of two men with developmental disabilities on Augustana Campus, University of Alberta. Responsibilities will include program of study planning and implementation, adapting and modifying curriculum, facilitating the development of personal relationships between students and members of the College community, and facilitating educational and social experiences for students as per their programs of study. The successful candidate will be committed to the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in community life and possess the following:
•    Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
•    Knowledge and familiarity with the post-secondary environment
•    Partnership building and problem-solving skills
•    Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
A university or college education in disability studies or a related field is required. Equivalencies will be considered.
